Although the Universal Serial Bus (USB) is an integral part of many computers, Java does not officially support USB. Getting your Java programs to interact with arbitrary USB devices thus requires either a third-party Java/USB API or your own Java/USB API. This article introduces two third-party APIs and my own API, which provides a partial USB interaction.

If you are a Linux developer in a Windows company, and you need to access Visual Sourcesafe repositories over the LAN, take heart: sourcesafe seems to work with Wine. Here are the steps I followed. The skill level required here is fairly high; if you're not an experienced Linux system administrator, you may need to read up on inittab, runlevels, fstab, kernel configuration, wine installation, samba, and all sorts of other arcane stuff.
Random thought: Windows disproves Darwinism
February 9th, 2009 — Computers and Internet
Microsoft Windows is the unique case that disproves Darwin’s theories of natural evolution and survival of the fittest while at the same time supplying no support for the main theory opposing Darwinism, the so called Intelligent Design Theory. It is obvious the existence of a system such as Microsoft Windows is the work of a deity. In this case an inherently chaotic and evil one; we usually refer to it as the Devil.
Mmm… wonder if I may be able to do a thesis on that, just wonder if it should be in the religion or computer science department…

Nitin says: "I have a Microsoft Windows based network at the office and they've setup a VPN connection for me to be able to hook up to the servers to take care of a couple of ASP.NET applications and manage the server.
Ever since I installed Ubuntu 8.10, I've been a bit disconnected from the office as I can only access the services exposed by the web gateway, so I finally decided to setup a VPN connection from Linux."
